PERFORM: Helping People Help Themselves
Greater health and well-being are central preoccupations of most Canadians, especially in an aging and physically inactive society where more and more people suffer from some form of disability. By focusing on solutions to prevent the development of health problems, and by creating innovative ways to assist with rehabilitation and recovery from disease and injury, the PERFORM Centre will make a major contribution to improving the well-being of all Canadians.
- research opportunities, teaching, training, and formative skill development for faculty and students alike.
- health programs to the community through participation in research studies: for example, patients with cancer, heart disease and its risk factors, and breathing problems (asthma, emphysema), as well as those people who do not yet have any problems but would like to improve their health.
- health assessments and evaluation.
- a full service sports medicine clinic addressing orthopaedic and activity related problems will be open to the community, with student therapists from the department working in the clinic under the direction of experienced Athletic Therapists.
Through research, education, and community service, PERFORM will be a world leader in the utility of exercise, physical activity, nutrition, and behaviour change to improve the health of Canadians.
